Throughout this class I have learned many things. Some of the most significant lessons are ones I can carry forward with other writing class as well as in other aspects of my life.
One of the main things that I learned how to do in this class is how to not use passive voice. While I did have a few issues with it, I was able to eliminate it completely by the time of the profile story. I can now look forward to papers that require minimum usage of passive voice.
I have also learned to effectively interview people. Before this class I was hesitant to talk to people or ask them questions about their lives. Another thing I learned was how to use the AP Stylebook. I had never heard about this book before, but now I can use it for future reference. The use of the book has prepared me for a future in newswriting and will make my career transition easier. I have also learned how to properly blog. While I use social media, I have never started a blog or even attempted to use one. Now I have the basics figured out, which should help me later on. This is helpful because several companies use blogs to communicate with customers. The final skill I have learned is how to write stories that can be free of bias. Before I would write a story and include my point of view. Now I can stop myself as I produce my final edit and eliminate the inclusion of bias.
As I reflect on this class, I am able to move forward with confidence. When I first enrolled, I was unsure as to how well I would succeed. Overall it was a challenge, but I feel that I gained so much in the way of proper newswriting.
